The Henley Course

A traditional links course designed by Tony Cashmore, in consultation with Nicklaus Design, The Henley is equal in every way, although stark in contrast and character to St John so that Members have a real choice about the course they want to play on any day.

Henley is far more rugged, much of it set wildly and broadly through wetlands with challenging bunkers fierce and deep - the faces whitely exposed, and the greens more convoluted with flexible approach routes. A truly beautiful course, Henley is tranquil, rich in wildlife and bordered by tapestry roughs as picturesque as its flawless fairways.

The wonderful site dictated much of what the golf course now displays - the vast river floodplain with its ancient oxbows, billabongs and elevated undulating 'linksy' thrusts forming an amphitheatre for golf holes playing in constantly changing directions. Then, the slow climb up a broad green valley to reach land high on the plateau for a couple of holes before a precipitous par 4 descent, 471 metres long to reach the flat lands again.

"Henley will examine strongly the very best players from its back tees - to try to overpower it will require great skill, and failure will be absolute. But a quieter, more thoughtful approach to its strategic values from the regular tees will reward all golfers seeking a beautiful and stimulating course to play. This is a very serious new course for Melbourne and Australia."
